Does GPTHuman bypass GPTZero?

Across twenty Pangram cells and twenty Turnitin cells, the recurring finding in this series has been an absence: bypass claims with no method, no screenshot, no independent test.

GPTHuman is the exception. It published a genuine, current, forensically datable GPTZero screenshot, and we could not break it.

That is worth stating before the criticism, because it is rare and it is real. This page reports no first-party test; everything below was fetched on 3 September 2026.

The screenshot, and why it holds up

A fake or recycled GPTZero screenshot fails specific tests. A genuine current result shows a three-class classification — human, AI or mixed, not a binary — a confidence category rather than a bare percentage, a probability breakdown across all three classes, and sentence-by-sentence highlighting. An image showing only “X% AI” is stale or fabricated; one displaying perplexity and burstiness dates to roughly 2023.

GPTHuman’s image shows all four, and more: a model version stamp reading Model 4.1b, a live app.gptzero.me document URL, a credit counter reading “247K credits of 300K remaining”, and a Windows taskbar clock reading 8:54 AM, 11 February 2026.

The result: AI 2% / Mixed 0% / Human 98%, on 529 words, with GPTZero stating it is “highly confident this text is entirely human.”

One detail in the same test set is worth more than the headline. The comparison screenshot for a rival tool shows GPTZero flagging that output as “originally AI, but rewritten by AI or a human”, tagged “Possible AI paraphrasing (BETA)”. That is GPTZero’s Paraphraser Shield working exactly as advertised — caught in GPTHuman’s own evidence. It is a reminder that a passing screenshot for one tool on one sample does not generalise.

Now the problems with the test

Three things follow. All four scans ran inside a single twenty-minute session on one morning — one trial per tool, no repetition, so nothing here measures consistency. Two of the four contradict the published method, which describes a 500-word Gemini sample; the 224-word and 192-word scans are under half that, and shorter text is easier to pass. And the baseline was confirmed partly using GPTHuman’s own detector as one of three graders.

To its credit, GPTHuman does disclose method — the prompt, the model, the tone setting, the pass threshold, and in a second test an explicit note that it used a third-party detector “to avoid any conflict of interest.” That is more than almost anyone in this market offers. It is still n=1.

The failure it published about itself

On its own page about AI detector false positives, GPTHuman publishes a table showing GPTZero scoring its humanized output at 75% AI — a clear fail — alongside 4.8% on ZeroGPT and 98% human on GPTHuman’s own detector.

That page is an unfinished editorial template left live in production. It contains blank score fields and an un-deleted instruction to the writer, visible to any reader: “Fill this in as you go, and drop your screenshots under each row so readers see the before and after for themselves.” No screenshot was ever added. A separate product page still ships Lorem ipsum body copy.

So GPTHuman’s own published GPTZero results for its own tool span 100% human, 98%, 98%, 92% — and 75% AI. The honest reading is that the tool works against GPTZero much of the time and not all of the time, which is roughly what you would expect and considerably less than what it sells.

What does it actually sell?

A guarantee with no content. All four pricing tiers carry the line “Bypass all AI Detectors guarantee*” — and the asterisk resolves to no footnote anywhere on the page. The only footnote present attaches to a different asterisk about unlimited word counts. GPTZero is named zero times in the pricing page’s HTML, and the word “refund” appears zero times.

The Terms, last updated 1 December 2024 and untouched for twenty-one months, say the opposite of the checkout:

“it is possible—though unlikely—that certain specialized AI detection tools may still classify these outputs as ‘AI generated’… we cannot guarantee that content created using GPT Human will always be regarded as ‘human-written’ by such third-party tools… By using this service, you acknowledge that reliance on AI detection results is at your own risk.”

And section 7: “All purchases are non-refundable.” The only remedy offered anywhere is a free rewrite.

There is also an Academic Integrity and Responsible Use page, dated 19 June 2026, forbidding users to “circumvent plagiarism detection, AI-use policies, authorship requirements, or other academic safeguards” — sitting one click from pages titled “How to bypass GPTZero” and “How to bypass Turnitin AI”, and from a checkout selling detector bypass.

Methodology. This page reports no first-party test. On 3 September 2026 we crawled gpthuman.ai’s sitemap and fetched all 56 English pages, counting every detector name across them. We requested each of the 13 GPTZero-named image files directly, recorded status and dimensions, and inspected the four scan screenshots visually against GPTZero’s documented result UI. We read the pricing page’s raw HTML to confirm what the asterisk resolves to. We grepped the raw HTML of GPTZero’s February 2026 paper, Pangram’s DAMAGE paper and Pangram’s August 2025 benchmark for GPTHuman by name. GPTZero’s access limits and UI behaviour are quoted from its own FAQ, developers page and paper. Our affiliate relationship is disclosed at the top.

Has any detector company tested it?

None has. GPTHuman is absent from GPTZero’s February 2026 paper, whose appendix names nine rival services; absent from Pangram’s DAMAGE paper‘s nineteen tools; and absent from Pangram’s August 2025 benchmark‘s twenty.

The one piece of adverse-interest corroboration comes from an unexpected place: Undetectable AI’s own founder published a GPTHuman review reporting GPTZero at 8% AI on its output — a pass — while noting his own company’s detector still flagged 62% of it. A direct competitor conceding the point is worth more than a vendor’s own table, even on a 150-word sample with no screenshot.

The available data says yes, and that reframes every claim in this cluster.

In the one multi-cycle benchmark with published raw data, GPTZero is the softest of five detectors for every one of seven tools measured. GPTHuman scores roughly 0.96–0.97 against GPTZero across three monthly cycles, but only 0.80–0.85 against Originality.ai. GPTHuman’s own comparison table shows the same shape from the other side: nearly every tool passed GPTZero while most failed Originality.

GPTZero’s own FAQ concedes the mechanism: “Our classifier is not trained to identify AI-generated text after it has been heavily modified after generation” — while its developers page claims a “Paraphraser Shield” catches exactly that. Both statements are currently published.

One figure to handle carefully. “GPTZero only catches 46% of humanized text” circulates constantly in humanizer marketing. It comes from Russell, Karpinska and Iyyer and is one cell of one table — n=30, on a research prompt the authors wrote themselves, not a commercial tool. In the same table GPTZero scored 100% on paraphrased text and 85.3% overall at a 0.7% false positive rate. We will not quote the 46% without those qualifiers even where it would support this page’s conclusion.

What should you take from this?

GPTHuman cleared a bar no other vendor in forty articles has cleared: it showed its work, and the work was real. That deserves credit and we are giving it.

It also sells a guarantee whose asterisk points nowhere, on a page that never names the detector, backed by terms that disclaim the outcome and refuse refunds — and it left a page live showing its own product failing the same detector at 75% AI.

The defensible summary: it beats GPTZero often, on the evidence it chose to publish, against the detector that every dataset says is the easiest to beat. That is a much narrower claim than “bypass all AI detectors”, and it is one you can verify yourself — paste your own output into gptzero.me free, no account, up to 10,000 characters.

If your real worry is being wrongly flagged on your own writing, keep your drafting history — it costs nothing and it survives a detector being wrong. It matters most for the writers detectors treat worst: ESL writers and AI detection and false positives for neurodivergent students. Check before you submit with the best pre-submission check and the Turnitin self-check, and strip the obvious tells by hand first via what to remove before using an AI humanizer.
